What is psychodynamic psychotherapy?

Psychodynamic psychotherapy is a form of talk therapy that focuses on exploring the unconscious mind and how past experiences, particularly early childhood, shape current behaviour, emotions, and relationships. It is rooted in the ideas of Sigmund Freud but has evolved over time, incorporating contributions from other psychoanalytic thinkers.

The core idea of psychodynamic psychotherapy is that unresolved conflicts and repressed emotions from the past can influence how individuals think, feel, and behave in the present. By bringing these unconscious thoughts and feelings to the surface, psychodynamic psychotherapy aims to increase self-awareness, leading to personal growth and emotional healing.

Psychodynamic psychotherapy can be short-term or long-term, depending on the individual’s needs. It is often more exploratory and less structured than other forms of therapy, like cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT).
